If you wear glasses, fold the eyecups down or retract them fully. That puts your eyeglass lens where it needs to be so you see the whole field. If you don’t wear glasses, leave the eyecups extended to keep your eye at the correct distance and block stray light. Step Two: Adjust the Barrel Spacing

Your eyes are a specific distance apart — your interpupillary distance — and the two barrels need to match it. Hold the binoculars up, look at a distant stationary object, and gently move the two tubes closer together or farther apart. Watch the dual circles: they should merge into one perfect circle without any black edge or crescent shadow on either side. If you see black edges, the spacing is still wrong. This adjustment is personal; you’ll need to reset it only if someone else uses the binoculars, and if adults and children share a pair, picking up a dedicated children’s binoculars often saves the frustration of constant re-adjustment.

Step Three: Focus One Eye at a Time

This is the step most people get backwards. Use the center focus wheel to get a rough focus on an object about thirty yards away — a license plate, a tree branch. Now cover the right objective (front) lens with your hand, leaving the right eyepiece uncovered. Look through the left side only and turn the center wheel until that left eye sees a sharp image. Keep your hands off the center wheel for the rest of the calibration. Now uncover the right lens, cover the left lens, and turn only the diopter ring — the small ring on the right eyepiece — until the right eye sees the same sharpness. That diopter setting is now locked for your eyes. From here on, you use only the center focus wheel for any distance change. If you adjust the diopter again later, you undo the calibration.
