An XLR mic can’t plug straight into a USB port, because the connection is analog and your computer needs a digital input. The working route to a clean recording on a Mac or PC is the same every time: microphone to interface, interface to computer, then choose that interface as your input device in the software. Here’s the exact order that works, plus the gain setting and the mistakes that trip people up.
What You Need Before You Start
Three pieces cover almost every beginner setup: an XLR microphone, a standard 3-pin XLR cable, and an audio interface or mixer. Getting the Signal Into Your Computer and Setting Gain

Set the gain while speaking at your normal volume, not whispering or shouting.
